The remains of Rhiwbach Quarry have been deserted for less time than most in the region, being the last slate quarry where workers still lived in the barracks. Quarrying began in 1812 and it finally ceased in 1952. At its prime in 1908, the quarry even hosted a school, as well as cottages, pigsties and a toilet block.
