In the southern Harz gypsum landscape, small swelling caves are also known as "dwarf" or "dwarf holes". These are swelling cavities, i.e. bubble-like cavities under layers of plaster of paris and anhydrite, which have arisen as a result of the increase in volume during the conversion of anhydrite into plaster by bulging upwards.
