Daily (and twice daily in the summer) they release water from the spillway and the Aratiatia rapids are formed. You can see the bare river bed then build u pinto a large flow of boiling whitewater, then back down to the river bed all in about 30 minutes. There are numerous viewing platform's along the rapids course.

Cycling
We arrived about 10 minutes before the scheduled opening time for the dam and discovered that it had already been opened. Apparently, the times aren't strictly adhered to. Unfortunately, we and many others missed the spectacle.
