The raccoon dog (also called Enok or Tanuki) from the order of carnivores belongs to the family of dogs.
Originally, the raccoon dog was at home in eastern Asia from Siberia to Vietnam and Japan. The animals spread to the west via Russia, where it was bred for its beautiful fur and released into the wild. The first evidence in East Germany dates back to 1961. They prefer to live in forests with dense undergrowth and on embankments and use abandoned fox and badger burrows.

The spread of the neozones is also a current issue in the district of Gifhorn. Raccoons, raccoon dogs and coypu find ideal conditions for survival in our intensively managed landscape – alongside the numerous native predatory species of fox, beech marten, pine marten, badger and polecat. In doing so, however, they also exert increased pressure on the small game population. Hares, rabbits, partridges and native songbirds are on the menu of the predatory game and suffer from the looters.
