Kielder Forest is the largest human-made woodland in England. 75% of its 250-square-mile (402 km) area is covered in trees. At its centre is Kielder Water, the largest human-made lake in Northern Europe.

Wildlife is abundant in the forest, with rare species such as red squirrels and ospreys thriving, whilst there is a carefully managed population of roe deer.

It is part of the Northumberland National Park and, thanks to the scarcity of human settlement, boasts some of the darkest skies in the country. The modern Kielder Observatory in the west of the forest runs frequent stargazing and astronomy events. See kielderobservatory.org.
