The archdeaconate of Dardesheim was first mentioned in 1218. The church, which was under the patronage of the cathedral provost of Halberstadt, is much older and was probably one of the first churches founded by Hildegrim when the area was Christianized. The latest research indicates the inauguration of a church in Darsen (Dardesheim) around the year 1129. The patron saint of the church is Saint Stephen, whose stone figure still crowns the main portal. In the middle of the 19th century, the previous church from the 13th century became dilapidated, closed by the building authorities and then demolished in 1856. The year 1859 is engraved under the base of St. Stephen, the start of construction of the new church. The topping-out ceremony for the new church tower was celebrated in July 1861. On the Sunday after Reminiziere, March 16, 1862, Superintendent Wetken took over the ceremonial inauguration of the new church. It was built in the neo-Romanesque style. The nave measures 36 meters. In the outer architecture, an unmarked transept is adjacent. In it rises a semicircular apse covered with a hemisphere. From the west gable rises the tower with its octagonal lantern. The western work is crowned by a bell house on the north and south side. These are decorated with branches and attached finials on the gables. The construction was carried out with hewn quarry limestone using stones from the previous building. The interior decorative part, especially the apse, is made of sandstone from Eilsdorf. An elaborate wooden ceiling construction with a surrounding gallery fits uniquely into the nave.
