During the Thirty Years' War, the people of Neukirchen and their evangelical pastor "Johannes Treu" found an ideal hiding place in this forest on a November evening in 1631. When the imperial troops, fleeing from the victorious Swedes, approached from the heat. On their retreat the mercenaries set everything on fire and as far as one could see in the evening twilight, all the villages in the area were on fire. With God's help, most of the population here in Höllgraben could not save their lives. But no family is said to have completely reunited, and Pastor Treu's young wife also died in these days due to unexplained circumstances.
