When the peat excavations started in Hoogeveen in the 17th century, drift sand was only a hunting ground for poachers. It wasn't until the 19th century that some buildings were built - well, turf huts and a few inn and farms such as "De Sleutel" from the Tonckens family, where Vincent van Gogh stayed.
