Rookhope Arch is the remains of what was once a 2-mile (3.2 km) long "horizontal" chimney, which was used to carry poisonous flue gases from the Rookhope smelting works to the high moor. Lead and fluorspar mining was once the main industry in the village.

The residue of lead and silver were periodically salvaged from the chimney, rather than them going to waste.

Hiking

For visiting, there is a dedicated car park just across the road from the arch with an information board. If you head east along the road there is a finger post leading into the field with a footbridge over the stream. Heading west, you can go over the stone bridge and then through a gate into the field where the arch stands.
