Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Innernzell is dedicated, is one of the most popular saints of all, along with Saint Martin. Almost every child in Germany - and far beyond - should know his commemoration day, December 6th.

On the eve of this day, the children used to put their shoes or boots in front of the door - which of course had to be cleaned with great care - so that they could be filled with gifts by St. Nicholas during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for the children to put out a small amount of food for the donkey, St. Nicholas' riding animal (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).

The Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas in Innernzell has a long history.

From the 13th to the 15th century, pastoral care was provided by the original parish of Aicha vorm Wald.

In 1471, the village was given the name Innernzell to distinguish it from Außernzell and other Zell villages. The parish was founded by the Halser Landgraves,

Ludwig I and Friedrich VII of Leuchtenberg.

The current parish church was built between 1835 and 1836 in the so-called Historic Style

and consecrated on August 18, 1842. The altars, pulpit, and statues come from the earlier church, which had become too small and dilapidated and was demolished in 1835.
