After the village of Leopoldshagen was founded as a farming village in 1748 under the rule of King Frederick II of Prussia, the colonists who settled there asked for a church. In 1751, a collection was held in the Prussian communities to raise money for the construction of the church in Leopoldshagen. According to initial plans, 600 thalers were needed. The collection raised 2504 thalers. The church was therefore built larger than the drawings had shown. The field stones for the foundation of the church were recovered in Bargischow and transported from there. On March 6, 1755, the button was placed on the top of the tower. As usual, money and a parchment were placed in it, on which the names of the Anklam council members were written. On October 12, 1755, the church was ceremoniously consecrated.[2] The new parish was founded by the town of Anklam in 1763. Until then, pastoral care was initially provided by the pastor of Ducherow, then by those of Kagendorf and Bargischow.

The rectory on the north side was looted and set on fire by Soviet soldiers in April 1945; it burned down completely. The church chronicle was also destroyed. The sexton's house and the old school were renovated and now serve as the rectory.

The town of Kalkstein, about 5 km west of Schwalckenheide, belonged to the Leopoldshagen parish from 1748 to around 1960. In the church on the south side, there were two rows of benches, the so-called "Kalkstein church benches", which were reserved for the Kalkstein residents on all Sundays and public holidays. The parish districts of Grünberg, Mörkerhorst, Kuhlerort and Zartenstrom also belonged to it.

There are several art monuments in the church: The pulpit altar, dating from the middle of the 18th century, is an architectural structure with a concave pulpit basket and acanthus leaf cheeks. The altar bears the initials of the patron, King Frederick II of Prussia.[3] The pews and west gallery also date from the time the church was built. A gilded silver chalice dates from the 15th century, another from 1709. The cuppa from the 18th century, a pair of candlesticks from 1755 and a paten, gilded silver, from 1817 complete the collection.
