The medieval village later developed around the castle and the market, becoming a fief of the Da Campiglio family and, starting from the 1400s, of the Rangoni marquises.

The Rocca remained the seat of the Podesta office until the Napoleonic era. The autonomy of the Community of Campiglio ended only with the appointment of Vignola as the capital of the canton of the Panaro Department.
