This canal was already dug in the 14th century and was used until the 16th century to transport the peat that was cut in the peat areas north and south of the current national border to the city of Bergen op Zoom. But the watercourse also served to extract clear water from the fens around Bergen, which was needed for the cloth and wool industry and for the medieval laundries. During wartime, the canal was also used to flood the low land around the city.
