The Riveristalsperre mainly serves the city of Trier and the municipalities Gutweiler, Korlingen and Sommerau for the drinking water supply. It is located near Riveris and Osburg on the edge of the Osburger Hochwald and the Ruwertal in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The largest part of the reservoir is in the municipality of Osburg, the lower area with the dam is in the municipality of Riveris and a narrow border at the southern tip in the municipality of Bonerath. A circular path with a length of around 7.5 kilometers leads around the dam.
