The Lambsbachtal nature reserve consists of two adjacent areas on the state border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. It covers a total area of 16 hectares and therefore extends over around 10% of the Lambsbach stream.
The Palatinate part is located in the district of Käshofen, Südwestpfalz district. The approximately 11.5 hectare area, which was placed under nature conservation in 1985, extends along the Lambsbach to the left and right of the state road L 462, along the state border with Saarland.[1]
The purpose of protection is to preserve the valley floodplains with their meandering waters, tall herbaceous meadows, reed areas, large sedge meadows and swamp zones as habitats and partial habitats for rare animal species and as locations for rare plant species and plant communities.
In October 2016, the nature reserve was expanded to include the district of Kirrberg (Homburg) in Saarland as part of the Natura 2000 network. A narrow, approximately 500 m long strip was added north of the L 462 state road. In the south, a part of the valley about 250 m long was added.[2]
The primary protective purpose is the preservation, restoration and development of a favorable conservation status of the floodplain forests, moist tall herbaceous meadows, transitional and swampy moors as well as the species and habitat of the stream lamprey.
