The Janubio salt pans in Lanzarote are the largest of their kind in the Canary Islands and form a man-made landscape of great architectural and cultural value. Today they still produce the white gold that was of great importance to the island's economy until relatively recently. The salt pans lie in a lagoon created by volcanic eruptions that created a lava barrier to the sea. The salt pans have been declared a Site of Scientific Interest because of their importance as a resting place for migratory birds.
