The parish appears in a document of 980 by Emperor Otto II as Curtem de Albinea cum plebe. At the time the church was probably enclosed by the walls of the nearby castle of Albinea since, in 1244 the bishop of Reggio Fogliani, escaped from the sights of the city's Ghibellines, placed his residence here. From a diploma of 1170 the church is dedicated to Santa Maria and San Prospero. In 1562 the parish, ruined by conflicts, was restored. In 1672 the bell tower was raised which collapsed following an earthquake in 1832 and was later rebuilt. In the first part of the eighteenth century the church was rebuilt in a Latin cross and consecrated in 1737. in 1883 the church was further restored. The decorations of the chapels were made between 1908 and 1935. The floors of the choir and presbytery are from 1832
