Kitzbüheler Ache (river description of the Tiroler Ache)
The Großache is a 79-kilometer-long river in Tyrol and Upper Bavaria, and the largest tributary of Lake Chiemsee. It has a total of five different names: Above Kitzbühel it is called "Jochberger Ache", from Kitzbühel to St. Johann it is called "Kitzbüheler Ache", from the mouth of the Fieberbrunner Ache it is called "Großache" and from the narrow valley near Erpfendorf it is also called "Kössener Ache". In Bavaria the river is known as Tiroler Achen. The Großache offers relatively easy whitewater in a charming landscape. The length of the hiking route from St. Johann in Tirol to Übersee is around 44.1 kilometers. This section is relatively easy in terms of water and hardly ever reaches WW St. II. Below Übersee the Tiroler Ache flows into Lake Chiemsee. The delta at the mouth is a nature reserve and may not be navigated or entered all year round.
