The bridge was built between 2009-2014. The architects' goal was "to bridge the gap between the two parks". In that respect, the bridge can be compared to an ecoduct or wildlife passage, but then intended for people.

The Jan Waaijerbrug (bicycle and pedestrian bridge) connects the Westerpark and the Nieuwe Driemanspolder with each other. The bridge is approximately 280 meters long and runs over the RandstadRail tram track and the Leidschendamseweg (N469). The bridge is made of fully recyclable and maintenance-free materials, such as Corten and stainless steel.

The Burgemeester Waaijerbrug is a beautiful, easily accessible bicycle and pedestrian bridge on the west side of Zoetermeer. With this bridge, which curves in all directions, the municipality wanted to create a special connection between several special nature reserves around Zoetermeer.
Cost: approx. 7 million euros
The striking lampposts have a clever dual function, they illuminate the bridge and are at the same time the pillars on which the bridge rests.
