In 1856, the founder of the Maffei Villa, Joseph Anton von Maffei, purchased the completely rotten and dilapidated wooden chapel built on this site in 1695 by the Grabenmacher family. He had it demolished and a new one erected in the Neo-Gothic style by the architect Engelbert Knittel. In 1928, the building became the property of the municipality, which had it modernized in the Neo-Baroque style in 1931 by Johann Baptist Biersack.

From the elevated plaza, one enjoys a magnificent view over Lenné Park, the lake, and the mountains, the enjoyment of which is only diminished by the nearby road.
