The people of Koblenz owe their Rhine facilities to the Prussian Queen and German Empress Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. She resided in Koblenz Castle for a long time in the summer and valued the Rhine region very much. Designed by the Prussian horticultural master Peter Lenné between 1856 and 1861, the Rhine facilities stretch for around 4.5 kilometers along the banks. The Empress Augusta monument in the south of the city is dedicated to the founder. It was built in 1896 and shows the seventy-year-old monarch in white Carrara marble. The monument was planned and executed by the Karlsruhe sculptor Professor Friedrich Moest and the architect Bruno Schmitz, who later created the Deutsches Eck.
