The Welwitschia Mirabilis is a centuries-old desert plant. Some plants are estimated to be 1500 years old.
The Welwischia area can be reached via Welwitschia Drive.
There are 12 trail markings along the piste that point out special features. At the trail markers 11 and 12 you have reached the Welwitschia area and the Riesenwelwitschia.
This plant occurs exclusively in the Namib.
A permit is required to drive to the Welwitschia area. You can get these in Swakopmund in the Nature Conservancy office in the NWR building.
From Swakopmund to Welwitschia Drive it is approx. 150 km there and back.
