This eye-catching Scottish hill lies to the south east of Lockerbie and has a flat-topped summit at 942 feet (287 m). There are two sides to this impressive hill: firstly, its geology is volcanic in origin and dates back to the Carboniferous period; and secondly, it has a human history that’s fascinated archeologists and historians for generations.
Burnswark Hill has an Iron Age hillfort, Bronze Age burial mounds, and was the site of a particularly bloody Roman battle. Evidence of medieval settlements and Civil War links have also been found. When you explore its wonderful bulk, you’ll be treading in the footsteps of many previous peoples.
The hillside is grassy moorland and the summit offers fantastic views across the surrounding undulating landscapes. To the south, Solway Firth glints. To the south west, spy the imposing shape of Criffel, a majestic hill looming above the Firth.
