Between 1530 and 1550, the “Roman Bridge” was built as part of the trade route from Sarajevo to Mostar as one of six stone bridges in the vicinity of Sarajevo. The current Ottoman bridge was built on the remains of a former Roman bridge that connected the Aquae Sulphurae settlement. Material from Roman ruins from the area was used to build the bridge. The architect of the bridge can no longer be reliably understood today. However, since the bridge over the Željeznica was almost identical in age, it is assumed that both bridges were built by Rustem Paša Hrvat. The renovation was commissioned by Gazi Ali Paša. In 1762 the bridge was renovated.
