The Retorto dam was designed in the early 1900s to feed the Retorto canal, already witnessed in the 15th century, from which water was being removed due to the construction of the Rusca power plant. The Retorto irrigates, together with the Trevigliese canals, the so-called Cremasca Island, a strip of land between the Adda and Serio rivers through two further derivations, the Cremasca canal (64 outlets, about 36 km of route) and the Pandina canal, shorter which ends its run between Pandino and Dovera. The legal rights of the Retorto fall within the Adda in Moscazzano.
