The Heinrichsthal telecommunications tower of the type »FMT 5«, built around 1970, belongs to the series of type towers that was designed around 1967 for medium-sized radio relay stations. A characteristic of these type towers is the lower space requirement of the operating floor compared to their predecessor types »FMT 1« to »FMT 3« - also due to advances in radio relay technology - with the same large antenna footprint. The telecommunications tower built for the television broadcast of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich as part of the "Olympic Line" also documents the often close connection between the expansion of the technical infrastructure and the organization of major sporting events.
