This segment takes you along part of a much longer path - known as The Black Path. It is a route that has been in use since at least medieval times and is also known as Templar's Way and The Porter's Way.
It was best know as a droving route - bringing sheep to the meat markets at Smithfield. Always gives me a buzz to know I'm travelling such a historic way.
