In 1591, Cornelis van Coolwijk commissioned the construction of Landhuis De Oliphant in the newly dike polder near the Nieuwe Sluis on the island of Voorne. Van Coolwijk lived in Delft "In de Gulden Olyphant". His house's name didn't just come out of the blue. He would have been active in the lucrative ivory trade and as steward had interests in Voorne. His newly built farm, with its octagonal turret, was to resemble a small castle and thus reveal its influence and prestige. The client's pretensions were also expressed in the gable stone in the form of a Gothic pointed arch above the tower entrance, on which an elephant with a castle on its back is depicted.
