One of the 11 medieval field watchtowers in the city of Quedlinburg. The Hamwarte served both to monitor the route to Halberstadt and to relay signals from watchtowers that did not have a direct line of sight to the watchman's room on the towers of the market church (Steinholzwarte, Heidbergwarte).
The type of building, floor plan and height are not known; historical city views show both a round and a square watchtower. According to an old Quedlinburg resident, it was a round tower, the remains of which were still visible at the site in the 1930s.
On the ridge path, the former fortification ditch is clearly visible as a small depression to the east of the 187 m hill on the Hamwartenberg.
In 1637, a skirmish with Swedish troops took place at the Hamwarte, in which the Quedlinburg captain Fleischmann was killed. In 1791, the watchtower was demolished because it was allegedly in a state of disrepair.
