The church of San Michele, in Gai di Cison di Valmarino (TV), was documented for the first time in 1266, as a prebend of the Benedictine monks of Santa Maria Maggiore in Treviso. The building was then mentioned as a country church in the records of the pastoral visit of Bishop Niccolò Trevisan in 1475. Probably, however, already at the time of the barbarian invasions, a sort of oratory stood on the top of the hill; this would explain the dedication to St. Michael, a saint to whom the Lombards were particularly devoted. The current building, with an adjoining cemetery, was built around 1740 on top of the hill and still fascinates passersby today. From its position, on the edge of the wood, you can admire the spectacle of the valley with your eyes, among cultivated fields, ancient villages and rolling hills.

The interior of the church is dominated by the high altar with a seventeenth-century altarpiece in a simple and popular style. It is a classic image of St. Michael, the warrior par excellence, defender of the Christian people. Until a few years ago this work was covered by a valuable altarpiece by Francesco da Milano, which depicted the Madonna with the child, St. Michael and St. George, removed for restoration and now kept in the rectory of Tovena. The frescoes that decorate the ceiling are attributed to the local artist Egidio dall'Oglio and depict three different episodes in which the Archangel Michael is the protagonist.

This church was dedicated to Archangel Michael "SAN MICHELE". The name (from the Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often shown - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, occasionally also a lance. Along with Raphael, Gabriel, and Uriel, Michael is one of the four archangels who (according to human conception) hold the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.
