St. Peter's Parish Church, Zell (Mosel)

The church is in the city center. One of the most beautiful classicist churches in the Moselle valley. The interior of the church is designed in the Rococo style, with a Madonna figure from the 15th century in a side altar. Particular attention should be paid to the church windows from 1907. Too bad to just walk past it.

The history of the Catholic parish church of St. Peter in Zell must always be viewed in the context of the history of the churches on the Zeller Hamm. A first church on the Zeller Hamm is attested in the year 690 in the will of the daughter Adela of the Frankish king Dagobert II. This was on the mountain dominating the Zeller Hamm, the St. Peterberg, where today the Marienburg can be found. It was the center of a large parish and a deanery that stretched from Kleinich in the Bernkastel district to Pomerania in the Cochem district. It also remained the parish church of Kaimt for a long time. However, when the Marienburg monastery was founded, the right of patronage was transferred to the Springiersbach Abbey in 1142 and soon afterwards it was relocated to the village of Kaimt. The parish church was later moved from Kaimt to Zell, but it is not certain exactly when this took place. The sources speak for a period between 1193 and 1220. So one spoke of a church of St. Peter on the mountain (today's Marienburg) and the church of St. Peter in the valley, i.e. in Zell.
