Best Hikes to Gem Bridge

Tips

  • Towering above the River Walkham, Gem Bridge is an impressive walkway that stands on the site of a former railway bridge, built by Brunel. Observation points allow you to stand out of the way of cyclists and walkers, so you can admire the views easily. This new bridge is made largely of steel and has five arches. Its minimalist, railing-topped construction was chosen so that you could see the forest through it and remain sympathetic to the surroundings. It opened in 2012 to cyclists and walkers.

  • the shingle beach at the riverside is nice for brief stop and the old mine entrance is worth a look. you can see the old support timbers and we saw a sleeping bat, so didn't want to disturb the little and moved on before too long.
