Caleras, or lime ovens, are constructions in which the limestone extracted from nearby quarries was cooked at a temperature of more than 1000 degrees to obtain calcium oxide, that is, lime. It is known that material was supplied from these lime kilns as early as 1566 for the works of the Escorial Monastery and that they also provided their lime, for example, for the construction in the s. XVIII of the Toledo Bridge in Madrid. The abundance of lime kilns that existed in Quijorna even explains, according to what they say, the name of the municipality, since “jorna” is associated with the word “oven”.
