The Apulian Aqueduct is considered the largest drinking-water infrastructure in Europe, built in the early decades of the twentieth century, and used for the water supply of over 300 municipalities, mostly Apulian. The last stretch of the extensive piping system was represented here by the imposing waterfall, completed in 1939, which boasted a length of over 250 meters and a vertical drop of approximately 120 meters, with a flow rate of 1,000 liters per second of discharge into the sea. The work was completed during the fascist period, and for the occasion a Roman Monolithic Column was brought directly from Rome and located at the end of the staircase. Today this work, which still reserves a unique spectacle, is actioned occasionally and for purely tourist purposes, using only brackish and non-drinking water.
