After mining suffered a severe crisis in the 1920s with extensive mine closings, the Sprockhövel mining industry experienced another significant boom after the Second World War, when numerous small mines were built to meet the at times immense demand for coal. Between the levels in which the early tunnel operations had mined and the lower levels in which the mining by the large underground mines had taken place, extensive coal reserves in some cases remained untouched, which were mined by the small mines until the 1960s.
