Commonly known as a gendarme, soldier or Swiss, this odorless bug measures approximately 1cm. It lives in small groups, often at the foot of trees and feeds mainly on seeds. It can also eat the eggs of other insects and even dead insects. Mating occurs in the spring, it is remarkable because it lasts for many hours. Individuals are easily observed moving side by side when mating. The female lays between 50 and 60 eggs in a burrow which she digs in a humid area. The larvae hatch in May and become adults in early winter.
