Whoever heads for this point stands on a mountain, all Royal Saxon triangulation stations stand on hilltops.
Station No. 42 Rothstein is a second order station of the triangular network of the Royal Saxon Triangulation. In the 19th century, the optical measuring devices were fixed to the monolith in order to target other stations for surveying purposes. Most of these technical monuments are still preserved and as they all stand on hilltops they always offer a great view of Saxony as a destination.
From this station were the stations of the 1st order No. 2 (Nostitzhöhe) and No. 3 (Jauernick), as well as the stations of the 2nd order No. 41 (Hutberg), No. 44 (Kottmar), No. 46 (Czorneboh) and No. 47 (Stromberg) targeted. The Saxon triangle network is considered a technical masterpiece of degree measurement, it was the most accurate land survey in Europe in its time. A bench at the station invites you to take a rest.
