Straightening of the Ems in the 1930s, an approximately two-kilometer-long Ems loop was cut off between Saerbeck and Hembergen and thus became the Hembergen oxbow. Part of the cut-off old course has silted up over the last 80 years and has developed into one of the last white willow forests in the Emsaue. This protected habitat was definitely to be preserved.
