The name Mariënwaerdt means island (waard) of Mary. In 1129, the Norbertines built an abbey on this bank of the Linge (on the site where Huis Mariënwaerdt now stands). Due to its location on the border of four provinces (Utrecht, Holland, Gelre and Brabant), the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1734, the estate came into the possession of the ancestor of the current family. “Heerlijkheid” refers to the lordly rights that the owner received when purchasing the estate. Hunting, lease and fishing rights plus management of roads and waterways. The surrounding land was and is used as agricultural land. Since 2005, the arable farming and livestock farming on the estate have been completely organic. The products are used as cattle feed for the own Lakenvelder cows, in the own restaurants or sold in the Landgoedwinkel or other shops in the region.
