The venerable St. Mary's Church is a really beautiful, old church and the most important historical building in the city. In the middle of the jumble of houses, its tower rises above the roofs of the old town.
After the great fire in 1286, in which half the town and the previous church were destroyed, it was decided in 1287 to build a three-aisled brick hall church on the highest point of the island. It was given the name "Hillige kercke unsser leven fruwen bynnen Rendesburg" - St. Marien.
The tower with the side chapels was not built until 150 years later. The beautiful ceiling paintings, the baptismal font and the group of crosses on the east wall of the aisle date from the pre-Reformation period. The altar from 1649, created by Henning Clausen, who actually wanted to keep his authorship secret, seems to almost float above the predella. The altar is made almost entirely of wood, only the reliefs above the altar table and the coats of arms are made of alabaster. It was captured by Johannes Barlaum.
An extremely exciting story also surrounds the beautifully filigree pulpit (1621) by Hans Peper, the Rendsburg carver, who has become known far beyond the city limits. The most striking ornament in the church is the abundance of large epitaphs. They reflect the history of art and culture from the middle of the 16th to well into the 18th century and captivate the viewer with their diversity and beauty.
During guided tours, the tower with the imposing bell cage and the five huge bells can also be “climbed”. From the dormer windows a wonderful wide view opens up over the old town and the Untereider.
