The Punta Rossa della Grivola (French Pointe rousse de la Grivola [1], 3,630 m above sea level, also simply called Punta Rossa or Pointe rousse) is a mountain in the Aosta Valley in the Gran Paradiso massif

The ascent route is not difficult, but is especially suitable for experienced hikers. However, it is advisable to bring an ice axe, crampons and possibly a rope, as ice can occur on the summit ridge depending on the time of year. Punta Rossa is also a challenging spring ski touring route.

The climb can be done in one day from the town of Cogne or preferably from the hamlet of Cretaz. The route winds along an excellent, well-marked path that climbs for a long time up the Pousset valley to the Col Pousset, where the Gratton bivouac is located. From the bivouac you go up through steep, stony terrain (snow until late summer), at the end of which you follow the increasingly steep and sharper ridge to the summit. It may make sense to spend the night in the bivouac and climb to the summit at dawn.

Alternatively, there is the option of climbing from the Vittorio Sella hut, where an overnight stay may be possible. From the refuge a path leads up the Vallone del Lauson and leads in steep serpentines up to the Colle della Rossa (Col de la Rousse). From here a good path crosses the steep eastern side of Punta Rossa to Col Pousset, from where you continue along the usual route.

At the summit there is the cross and the signature book. The view of all the massifs of the Aosta Valley is spectacular: Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc, Grandes Jorasses, Cervino and Monte Rosa.

The way back is via one of the ascent paths. The way back over the south ridge is even more exciting (only recommended for experienced climbers). From the summit follow the southern ridge to Colle della Nera (pay attention to the steep slopes of the Trajo glacier). From Colle della Nera (Col de la Noire) follow the paths and cairns until the junction with the path to Colle della Rossa, near a small lake. In a southeasterly direction up to Rifugio Sella.

The Punta Rossa della Grivola is also a peak for cycling mountaineers and holds the record for the highest peak that can be climbed entirely downhill on the saddle of a bicycle in Italian territory.
