    Hiking

The Punta Rossa della Grivola (French Pointe rousse de la Grivola [1], 3,630 m above sea level, also simply called Punta Rossa or Pointe rousse) is a mountain in the Aosta Valley in the Gran Paradiso massif

The ascent route is not difficult, but is especially suitable for experienced hikers. However, it is advisable to bring an ice axe, crampons and possibly a rope, as ice can occur on the summit ridge depending on the time of year. Punta Rossa is also a challenging spring ski touring route.

    Running

The route is not too difficult/technical apart from the last 100m of elevation where you are being exposed on both sides. We did the route in early october without snow which is exceptional.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary ascent routes to Punta Rossa della Grivola, and what are their key features?

There are two main ascent routes. One popular option starts from the town of Cogne or the hamlet of Cretaz, following a well-marked path up the Pousset valley to Col Pousset, where the Gratton bivouac is located. From there, it's a steep, stony climb to the summit ridge. The alternative route begins from the Vittorio Sella hut, ascending the Vallone del Lauson to Colle della Rossa, then traversing the eastern side of Punta Rossa to Col Pousset to join the main route. Both routes involve significant elevation gain and are considered challenging.

How difficult is the climb to Punta Rossa della Grivola, and is it suitable for beginners?

The climb to Punta Rossa della Grivola is considered a challenging endeavor, best suited for experienced hikers and mountaineers. While not overly technical, it involves significant elevation gain, often exceeding 2000 meters, and can be exposed, especially in the final 100 meters of elevation. The summit ridge can also have ice, requiring an ice axe and crampons. There are no beginner-friendly routes to the summit; it demands a good level of fitness and mountaineering experience.

What is the typical elevation gain for the ascent to Punta Rossa della Grivola?

The ascent to Punta Rossa della Grivola typically involves a significant elevation gain, often exceeding 2000 meters from common starting points like Valnontey or Cretaz. Hikers should be prepared for a long and strenuous climb.

What kind of terrain can hikers expect on the way to Punta Rossa della Grivola?

Hikers will encounter varied terrain, including well-marked paths in the lower valleys, transitioning to steep, stony, and scree slopes as you approach higher altitudes. The final sections involve an increasingly steep and sharp ridge to the summit. Depending on the time of year, snow and ice can be present, particularly on the summit ridge and in shaded areas until late summer.

Are there any specific landmarks or viewpoints to look out for on the trail to Punta Rossa della Grivola?

Key landmarks include the Vittorio Sella refuge and the Gratton bivouac at Col Pousset, both offering potential overnight stays. The summit itself, marked by a cross and a signature book, provides spectacular panoramic views of the Gran Paradiso, Mont Blanc, Grandes Jorasses, Cervino (Matterhorn), and Monte Rosa. Along the way, you might also spot the Trajo glacier and various high-alpine lakes.

What are the seasonal considerations for hiking Punta Rossa della Grivola, especially in winter?

While the best time for hiking is typically late summer to early autumn, Punta Rossa della Grivola is also a challenging spring ski mountaineering route. Winter conditions on the summit involve significant snow and ice, making it suitable only for highly experienced mountaineers with appropriate gear, including ice axes, crampons, and potentially ropes. Early October can sometimes offer exceptional conditions without snow, but this is not guaranteed.

Is Punta Rossa della Grivola suitable for family-friendly hikes or dog-friendly trails?

The full ascent to Punta Rossa della Grivola is not suitable for family-friendly hikes or beginners due to its significant difficulty, elevation gain, and exposed sections. Similarly, while some lower trails in Gran Paradiso National Park may be dog-friendly, the high-alpine environment and challenging nature of the summit route make it generally unsuitable for dogs, especially given the potential for ice and exposure.

What accommodation options are available near Punta Rossa della Grivola?

For those undertaking the multi-day ascent, the Vittorio Sella refuge and the Gratton bivouac at Col Pousset are key accommodation options directly on or near the routes. The bivouac offers a unique experience for a dawn summit ascent. In the valleys below, particularly in the municipality of Cogne, you can find various hotels, guesthouses, and other lodging options.

How long does it typically take to climb Punta Rossa della Grivola?

The climb to Punta Rossa della Grivola is a demanding undertaking that often requires more than one day. While it can theoretically be done in a very long day from Cogne or Cretaz, many hikers choose to break it up with an overnight stay at the Vittorio Sella refuge or the Gratton bivouac to allow for a more manageable pace and an early morning summit push.

What essential gear should I bring for a hike to Punta Rossa della Grivola?

Given the challenging nature and potential for ice, essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers for varying weather, food and water, a headlamp, and navigation tools. Depending on the time of year and conditions, an ice axe, crampons, and potentially a rope are strongly advised, especially for the summit ridge. Always check current conditions before your ascent.

Are there any alternative summits or notable day hikes in the Gran Paradiso National Park area?

Yes, within the Gran Paradiso National Park, there are numerous other peaks and day hikes. While Punta Rossa della Grivola is a significant challenge, the park offers a range of trails from easier valley walks to other demanding summits. Nearby peaks include the higher Grivola, Grivoletta, Punta Nera, and Punta Bianca della Grivola. Many trails offer opportunities to explore the pristine environment and spot wildlife like ibex and chamois.
