The abbey is named after Bernard of Clairvaux. The foundation of the abbey, first in Vremde (1236) and then moved to Hemiksem (1243), was made possible in part by the support of the dukes Henry I and his son Henry II of Brabant. The abbey was confirmed by Pope Urban IV. It is believed that the monks of the abbey were closely involved in the mining of clay in the Rupel region, and thus in brick making. The name paepsteen still refers to the religious influence. The end of the 16th century was a turbulent period for the Catholic clergy in the region, so that in 1578 the abbey was temporarily abandoned under the pressure of the iconoclasm. Most of the abbey burned down in 1672. The current buildings therefore date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The French Revolution dissolved the order and the abbey's church was demolished. In 1836, the religious bought the Saint Bernard Abbey in Bornem and left Hemiksem for good. Bornem Abbey still exists.

The Cistercians of the imposing Saint Bernard Abbey, founded in 1243, are the founders of clay mining and brick production in the Rupel region. In the Middle Ages, the abbey was one of the richest in Western Europe. The French Revolution decided the fate of the Cistercians. The abbey church was demolished and a naval hospital was built in 1811 in the Napoleonic era. Later the building complex was still used as a prison etc ... Now it is used as a town hall. The 14 ha park is simple and historic. There are also two museums. The Heemmuseum and the Tile Museum Gilliot. Definitely worth a visit.
