This granite church was built in 1144 on the highest point of the city of Varel. It was built in honor of St. Peter, whose name she was to bear. But in 1650 the church became part of the large palace complex. Since then the church is called "Schlosskirche". The count's family also had a tomb here. In 1870 a major fire destroyed the castle and the church remained. It is under monument protection and is one of the most impressive buildings of Lower Saxony.
