Text on memorial stone:

American soldier Sergeant Robert S. Haws who died here on the Dikkebuiksweg during the liberation of Wijlre on or around September 14, 1944.

Robert S. Haws was buried in Wijlre cemetery on September 18, 1944, while the American army had reported him missing (Missing in action). It was not until May 1945 that the American army discovered that Robert S. Haws was buried in the cemetery in Wijlre.

On October 22, 1945, he was reburied at the American Military Cemetery in Margraten, in Block SS, Row 8, Grave 200. On July 15, 1949, Robert was finally buried in his final place: Block O, Row 16, Grave 3 in Magraten. .

Robert was born in 1918 in Philomont, Loudon County, Virginia. He was a sergeant in K Company, 30th Infantry Division, 3rd Battalion, 199th Infantry Regiment.
