The best starting point for a stroll through Berkenthin is the administration, which is located in the center directly on the bridge over the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. It is only about 200 meters walk through the village park to the canal and the lock. For big and small, it is very interesting to observe how cargo ships, yachts and paddle boats are transported here. The now well-developed path along the canal was once the towpath. Humans, horses and oxen used to move their boats from here. Engines did not exist yet and for sailing the narrow channel with its many turns was not suitable. Only by trekking, rowing or staking with long poles you could move the boats.
