The structure develops on the cave where Benedict of Norcia lived as a hermit, before undertaking the foundation of the Sublacense monasteries.
Its historical and spiritual importance, the extraordinary cycles of medieval frescoes, including the oldest portrait of St. Francis of Assisi, and the suggestive views it offers make the monastery of San Benedetto the main destination for travelers who reach the Valle dell ' Aniene.
