In Appenzellerland we celebrate the turn of the year twice: according to the Gregorian calendar on December 31st and according to the Julian calendar on January 13th. The New Year's Eve lice are on their way on the dates mentioned. A distinction is made between "beautiful Chläus", "wüeschti Chläus" and "Naturchläus". The beautiful people wear elaborately decorated headgear with scenes from rural life, which are lovingly handcrafted in hundreds of hours of leisure. The deserts and natural lice captivate with their artistic, wildly decorated hats, hoods and masks. From early in the morning, the New Year's Eve chests are on the move, moving from house to house and wishing everyone “it's good news” with devout singing and breezy “gauze”. In the evening they are out and about in the inns until midnight.

If December 31st or January 13th falls on a Sunday, the previous Saturday will be stolen.
