Borg Nienoord

The Nienoord estate was founded in 1508, when squire Wigbold van Ewsum bought extensive stretches of peatland near Midwolde. He had a new house built, the “Nije Oord”, and had peat excavated. Because peat was an important fuel, Van Ewsum and his descendants were able to build a fortune. The Nienoord house grew into the largest borg (noble country house) in the Northern Netherlands. The church in Midwolde came under the control of Nienoord and became the family burial church. The original deposit was built in 1525 by the Van Ewsum family who came from the Ewsum deposit near Middelstum. The deposit now houses the National Carriage Museum. Another attraction is the shell cave, which is located in a building in the rose garden.The deposit now houses the Grand Cafe Borg Nienoord. It is open during the day for lunch and a coffee stop, but can also be booked for parties, parties and weddings.Grand café opening hours:
