A map by the Frankfurt cartographer and heraldic artist Elias Hoffmann gives us an insight into the horrors committed during the Peasants' War. Between 1581 and 1592, he drew a series of detailed maps of Hanau's territory for the County of Hanau, which were used in border negotiations and court proceedings. The focus of interest was the territory inherited by the Counts of Rieneck, who had died out in 1559 and were administered jointly with the Archbishopric of Mainz or bordered Hanau.
