    Saracen Tower Church + Rectory - Dittelsheim🚴‍♂️

The Protestant church in the Dittelsheim district was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. According to older interpretations, the church's Saracen Tower dates back to around 1200, popularly known as the "Heidenturm" (Heathen Tower). Dendrochronological examinations of the timbers in the octagonal tower floors have shown that they were built around 1080. The church itself was demolished in 1729 and replaced by a Baroque building; only the porch and the tower survived. Moorish or Byzantine stylistic influences are said to have played a role in this Romanesque tower; it is often described as the most beautiful of its kind in Rhenish Hesse. The tower spire, with its 16-lobed domed roof, indicates the Hohenstaufen Rhineland's ties to the East and belongs to a group of similar spires in Rhenish Hesse (cf. Alsheim, Guntersblum, and St. Paul's in Worms). The name Saracen Tower refers to the crusaders who are said to have built it. 🚴‍♂️

    ----------------------------
The Protestant rectory is one of the most noteworthy buildings in Dittelsheim. It is located at Hauptstraße 7, was built in 1752/53, and rebuilt in 1872. It is adjoined by an 18th-century rectory barn.

The rectory is surrounded by other noteworthy buildings, such as the schoolhouse, the Geispitzheimer Hof, and the Babelshof. The war memorial (an obelisk with an eagle) honoring those who died in the 1870/71 campaigns is also located nearby. 🚴‍♂️
